1401 is a medium to long grain basmati rice developed to address the maturity cycle and yield productivity during cultivation. It was developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) for commercial cultivation in 2008. It grows in the Northern Indian States under the foothills of the Himalayas. Its grain size is relatively shorter than that of other hybrid varieties, but it tastes as good as any premium basmati. The rice is widely consumed in home cooking, treating guests and festive meals. Being an affordable rice, it can be used in bulk catering and community kitchens. Under suitable farming conditions, 45 to 55 quintals per hectare is obtained, which is quite significant.
